Occupy World

The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government. - Thomas Jefferson

As I write this the NYPD is busy throwing Occupy Wall Street protesters out of Zucotti Park and Liberty Square. You may have heard about these protestors, although the mainstream media has been trying to ignore them for two months. And if you have heard anything it has probably been dismissive at best. But tonight almost no media will be saying anything. Because the NYPD has shut down the airspace so that news copters can't cover the size and scale of what is happening from the air. The NYPD has confiscated press credentials and kept the press out of the area. They have closed the Brooklyn Bridge, and shut down the subways to stop the very real threat of additional people joining in the protest. Right now in New York the NYPD is doing what we chastised the Libyans for doing to their own people. They are using sound canon on people, tear gassing the kitchen that served people, tearing down tents that sheltered abused women, destroying a small library and beating people, in one case a council member, until they bleed. People are being led away in zip cuffs.

The only thing the media have said at all about the protesters is to question what demands they have. Because the mainstream media can't deal with anything that doesn't come as a list of "talking points".

But this protest is not summed up in bullet points. It is only about injustice wherever it exists. It is about the consolidation of wealth and power in the top 1% of this country (and others) and the way some have used it to control our political system and media and to unfairly gain economic advantage. People can see that the current crisis in our economy is all about a broken and corrupt system and more and more people realize that to fix it requires a reboot of the system. This movement is not hippies, not homeless, not leftist or right wing, (definitely)not tea party, not about a free ride or entitlements. But it is about the very basis of government and why it is formed in the first place. The social contract only works when everyone abides by the contract. There is no contract when one party breaks it.

Political tags--such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and. so forth--are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort. - Lazarus Long

The NYPD will go home from their jobs tonight having done two things. They will have caused pain and injury to some of the very people they have sworn to serve and protect, and they will have given even more strength to the movement they were expected to destroy.

Let us pray now that in this world where we are free to share information rapidly and globally that everyone, every person who believes in liberty and fair treatment of his fellow men, will see what is happening and take the steps necessary to change the world.

Whenever you do a thing, act as if all the world were watching. - Thomas Jefferson
