Does history record any case in which the majority was right? - Lazarus Long
Recent political events have had me here at my blog wanting to write something time and again. And every time the sheer stupidity of the people involved, the unbelievable chutzpah and/or total ignorance has left me with a complete writer’s block. Not because I didn’t know what to say, but because the scope of the problem and what needed to be said were just overwhelming. Most of the time it was all I could do to shut my mouth after it had fallen open again. It all started when the 2012 political campaign started, in the year 2010. Before that there was ample idiocy but recently the stupid people, especially politicians and pundits, seem to have lost all their remaining neurons. It begins with the fact that every one of theses clowns is running for office on a platform which amounts to hating anything Obama says or does, and then it ends with the so-called debt crisis. But what finally really pissed me off was seeing the media pundits talk about the oil sands as if this was the answer to creating jobs in this country.
So I was reading the other day about the oil sands and the end of our planet and came across this article Goodbye to All That: Reflections of a GOP Operative Who Left the Cult. And after reading that it finally dawned on me what to write about :
There are tens of millions of low-information voters who hardly know which party controls which branch of government, let alone which party is pursuing a particular legislative tactic.
Low-information voters. What a nice way to say stupid people!
You are reading this which means you are already pretty far from being a low-information voter. The fact that you can read without moving your lips puts you way ahead of most of the people I’m talking about. I’m talking about the 48% percent of Iowa Republicans that don’t believe in evolution or the 66% who don’t believe in global warming or the 32% of them who still won’t accept Barack’s birth certificate. These people are dumb. Sure they might otherwise be as nice as your Aunt Mabel but let’s face facts, they are beyond ignorant.
The problem is our country is full of these idiots. Which leads me to the whole point and title of this piece. Collectively we get the government we deserve. Unless and until the rest of us stand up and do something about it, we are all in the same boat with the stupid ones. “Ship of fools on a cruel sea, Ship of fools sail away from me.”
Thanks to years of neglect of the schools, the country is rapidly filling up with these fools. They get their misinformation from corporate controlled media. They aren’t republican or democrat, they are just plain ignorant. And the more people who come home, kick off their shoes and watch the slime of Fox News ooze from the video along their living room floor, the more trouble we are going to be in. They are giving control of our country to corporate fascists and turning the U.S. into a third world country. If you don’t believe that just check the GINI index over at the CIA World Factbook. The inequality of income between rich and poor places the US right in there with Jamaica, Cameroon, and not too far behind Uganda and the Philippines. There are 96 other countries where the gap between rich and poor is not as large as it is here and that includes all of western and most of eastern Europe. Sure in part that is because we have Warren Buffet and Bill Gates to tip the scales but there are a lot of billionaires outside the US too and that doesn’t explain everything. This graph should give you a clue. Notice how the difference between the 95th percentile and the 80th of wealth in this country has widened? People in all the lower percentiles are feeling that gap in the quality of their lives. Even Robert Reich, former secretary of labor, agrees.
What can be done about this? In the final analysis the only long term solution requires people to get a lot smarter; Get smarter and better informed and start making smarter choices politically. Historically this kind of situation has always ended badly for everyone. Huge gaps between rich and poor are responsible for inventions like the guillotine. If the low-information voters (stupid as they are) don’t get a bit more information we will all end up with the government they deserve.
